CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Luci tenderly laid out two of her favorite dresses on her cot: the orchid and the delicate green. Lovingly, she slid her fingers over the soft, silky material of the orchid’s chiffon and then the lacy material of the green. The bodice of the green gown tended lower and was rounded, whereas the orchid’s neckline formed a “V.”

She supposed she favored the green, and her touch traced over the trimmings of lace at the front of the skirt, which created a flattering “V” shape over the upper hips. Many volumes of swathed material in front and in back of the skirt draped loosely to the floor. The gown was made with a train; it was plain, yet silky and overlaid with lace, and was gathered to the lower end of the bodice in back.

Opening her trunk, she removed her satin, ivory-colored slippers. They were simple, yet pretty, and they would match either dress. Dared she do it? Dared she dress up in her most beloved feminine clothing tonight?

It would certainly complement the style of the evening planned ahead, for Buffalo Bill had announced that in addition to entertaining many of New York’s elect, there was to be a sit-down supper, given to celebrate the closing of the last show here in the New York harbor. A ball would follow as soon as dessert and coffee were served, and Luci, as feminine as any other woman, wished with all her heart to attend that ball; she, dressed as Jane’s “sister.”

“What are you doing, Lucinda?”

Luci jumped, and turned quickly to see that Jane had come to stand behind her. Pressing her hand to her heart, she admitted, “Goodness, you scared me. I had seen you with the very handsome and talented Will Granger after our last performance this afternoon. I thought you were still with him.”

“Yes, I was. But a few of his friends soon joined him, and I felt…” Jane’s words trailed off. “There are one or two of the men he keeps company with that scare me a little. One of them in particular looks at me as though…as though…” Jane shrugged. “I don’t know, Luci. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable when I’m with Will and his friends.”

“Then you shouldn’t have to be with them. You were wise to walk away.”

“I suppose you're right. By the way, what are you doing?”

Luci turned her back on her sister, and mumbled softly, barely audible, “I’m thinking of dressing as myself tonight.”

“I’m sorry, Luci, I didn’t hear what you said.”

Luci turned around slowly, facing her sister. She put her hands behind her back, and, looking down at their recently purchased woolen rug which covered the hard ground of their shared bedroom, she answered softly, “I’m considering attending the dinner and ball tonight as your sister, who has only recently come to visit.”

Glancing upward, Luci saw that Jane looked at her oddly before tendering an opinion, and, even then, it was after some minutes that she said, “I think that’s a splendid idea. Brilliant, really.
